The Kueka Stone

Pemon and Macuxi

The Pemon and Macuxi communities were strong rivals and the rules of the villages specified that marriages had to be between inhabitants of the same community and not with others, otherwise they would be punished by the Makunaima God according to this Venezuelan legend.

At that time, Taure Pam, the young Pemon, married the most beautiful young woman of the Macuxi community, breaking the rules of the people and therefore had to elope. Their escape did not prevent Makunaima from going after them until he caught up with them. Annoyed by the young couple’s defiance, he cursed them to remain eternally embraced and turned into the Kueka Stone.
