Naba and Balam
One day, while walking in the forest, Princess Naba met a young warrior named Balam. Both fell in love at first sight and began to meet in secret, since love between them was forbidden due to class differences and traditions of their tribe. When the chieftain found out about his daughter’s relationship with Balam, he was furious and ordered the warrior to be executed.
Nabá, upon hearing the tragic news, ran to the place where they used to meet and wept bitterly for the loss of her beloved. In her grief, Naba’s tears fell on the earth and gave birth to balsam trees, whose resin has healing properties. It is a story that symbolizes the power of true love and sacrifice, highlighting the cultural importance of balsam in the lands of «El Salvador».
