Kingdom of Galicia
Gonzalo of Mondoñedo was a bishop in the «Kingdom of Galicia», widely respected and with a reputation for sanctity. During an attempted invasion by the Vikings in the 11th century, Gonzalo decided to evacuate the city of Mondoñedo and take refuge in the mountains. As they watched the approaching Viking fleet, Gonzalo began to pray hard.
As he prayed, a storm broke out at sea, with strong winds and violent waves that sank the Viking ships one after another. At the end of this miraculous event, Gonzalo proclaimed freedom for his people. Although this is the most accepted version of the story, there are other variants and debates about the veracity of the events and the identity of the invaders.
