Dinah and Shechem

The Dishonor of Dinah

In the ancient land of Canaan, there is a conflict that was triggered when Shechem, prince of the region, dishonored Dinah, Jacob’s daughter, by taking the young woman by force. Despite this act, Shechem fell in love with Dinah and sought to marry her. Jacob and his sons accepted the marriage proposal on the condition that all the men in the city of Shechem be circumcised.

However, while the men were weakened by the surgery, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, took revenge by killing all the males of Shechem, plundering the city and taking its inhabitants captive. This story tells us about the justice and morality of ancient Israel, where revenge is justified by dishonor, the biblical account can be found in Genesis 34.
