Types of Deaths in Every Civilization
In ancient Rome, prisoners were thrown into the jaws of wild animals during arena games, a macabre spectacle for the public. The Vikings devised an even more painful death called the bloody eagle, in which they carved the victim’s back like the wings of an eagle.
The Mongols poured molten silver on the victim’s head. The Ottomans beheaded criminals. The British relied on the traditional hangman’s noose, the Tower of London being an infamous place of execution. Meanwhile, in revolutionary France, the guillotine became a symbol of terror, with its blade falling swiftly on the victim’s head.
